Health Benefits of Yoga
Health Benefits of Tai Chi

The three main components of tai chi — movement, meditation, and deep breathing — have specific health purposes. Here are five of the main benefits of practicing tai chi:

  • Tai chi helps the digestive system function better

  • Increases calmness and awareness

  • Improves balance

  • Aids the exchange of gases in the lungs

  • Massages the internal organs

Fans of tai chi, believe it helps ease stiffness and pain. People also practice to have better sleep and feel overall healthier. Its also been known to help with muscle strength, coordination, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. Even though tai chi is for people of all ages, because it's a low impact exercise, it especially benefits the elderly.

In fact, a 2014 study found elderly people who practiced tai chi had greater connectivity in the part of their brain that is related to decision-making and attention, than older adults who were sedentary.

Tai Chi vs. Yoga

Both tai chi and yoga use meditative movement to deepen the connection between mind and body. But these key differences help set them apart:

  • Origins: Tai chi originated in China as a traditional martial art. It focuses on balancing qi, or energy, in the body. Yoga, on the other hand, originated in India as a spiritual practice.

  • Physical position: Typically, you practice tai chi while standing. But yoga includes moves that involve sitting, standing, or lying down. Both methods can be modified for people with limited mobility.

  • Physical execution: Tai chi and yoga use different techniques to work your muscles. Tai chi involves dynamic movements, while yoga includes mostly fixed postures.

Better balance and flexibility may be the trademark benefits of tai chi and yoga. And with good reason. Both practices are designed to enhance body awareness and have been linked to these improvements. But strong research points to tai chi for better balance and yoga for increased flexibility.
